AppWorx Powers Utility Company
with Automation Technology; Texas-New Mexico Power Company Leverages
AppWorx Enterprise Scheduler for Premier Customer Support
BELLEVUE, WA., February 8, 2001 - BUSINESS WIRE - AppWorx
Corporation (www.appworx.com),
a leading provider of enterprise scheduling solutions, announced
that they have successfully completed automation efforts on Texas-New
Mexico Power Company's IT infrastructure, enabling them to provide
exceptional support to their 238,000 customers.
On Jan. 1, 2002, most customers in Texas and New Mexico will be
able to choose their electrical utility on the open market. Because
deregulation greatly increases competition, power companies like
Texas-New Mexico Power are leveraging automation technologies like
AppWorx to take better care of their customers and provide faster
support response.
A critical contributor to the company's customer satisfaction is
the efficiency and accuracy of its billing and customer service
systems.
"The most important application we have is our customer information
system," said Ron Williams, director of IT for Texas-New Mexico
Power. "We have to turn all processing activity around in a
very tight window so that not only are our customers receiving their
bills and notices in a timely fashion, but our customer service
personnel can access current databases during normal business hours.
We need to be able to respond immediately to any inquiries or issues
to provide the highest level of customer service."
Before acquiring AppWorx, the nightly job schedule included over
200 processes that were interdependent and interrelated. Texas-New
Mexico Power quickly learned that manually controlling processing
in their system not only wasted valuable time, but also ran the
risk of operator error causing problems with data integrity.
"We were doing everything manually and it was taking an extremely
long time to process the data. We knew that we had to do something,
so we started to look for a scheduling system that would help us
improve that processing time," said Williams.
However, Williams knew that any solution Texas-New Mexico Power
acquired would have to be capable of handling multiple processes
on distributed machines and disparate platforms- like their SCT
Banner® Customer Information System running against Oracle databases.
As Williams explains, "We were not looking for a process that
would address one area and then create another process to Handle
another area. It had to have total continuity from beginning to
end, which in our case was from the bill-print process to the updating
of customer databases."
After carefully evaluating the competition, Texas-New Mexico Power
chose AppWorx.
"We have some interrelations and conditions that are just
not available from some other software package. We run roughly 200
jobs a night, Monday through Friday. For our operations people to
run those jobs in AppWorx, they simply start one AppWorx module.
From that point forward, the module starts a job chain that chain
has multiple chains in it, and even some of those chains have sub-chains,"
said Aaron Roberson, Texas-New Mexico DBA supervisor.
With AppWorx a single operator submits a single job and takes care
of the entire night's processing. "We start at 8:30 at night,
and the process finishes at 6:00 in the morning. So instead of manually
running 200 individual jobs at night, all you're doing is kicking
off one module and monitoring the activity," Roberson explained.
And AppWorx has freed the night operations staff from "standing
guard" over the system. "We do not have to dedicate a
person to respond to problems; the AppWorx system takes care of
our nightly processing without babysitting. This releases resources
to do other things during that time."
An added advantage to Texas-New Mexico Power has been the out-of-the-box
functionality of the AppWorx product. "AppWorx has been highly
stable and reliable. We have never run into a problem because we
didn't have a fix or an upgrade that was needed, and that means
a lot these days," Williams said.
"By automating business-critical processing for Texas-New
Mexico Power, AppWorx has saved time and money for the company,
while ensuring the integrity and timeliness of data processing,"
said Bill Wrenn, president and CEO of AppWorx Corporation. "All
this adds up to better service for Texas-New Mexico Power's customers."
