Excelergy Secures $15 Million in
New Venture Financing
Mezzanine Round Brings Total
Investment in Company to$63 Million
LEXINGTON, MA., February 1, 2001 – Excelergy Corporation,
the pre-eminent provider of software technology and products for
restructuring global energy markets, today announced it has received
$15 million in new equity financing from investors Hummer Winblad
Venture Partners, Sigma Partners, Battery Ventures, and Nassau Capital
LLC. With this new financing, a total of $63 million of venture
capital has been invested in Excelergy since February 1999.
“This is a strong sign of our excitement about Excelergy,” said
Mark Gorenberg, a partner at Hummer Winblad. “The company has an
experienced management team, a large worldwide marketing opportunity,
and a business model with a definitive path to profitability. In
today’s challenging environment for new venture capital, Excelergy
is an investor’s dream.”
Part of the funding will be used to Continue the aggressive development
of Excelergy’s suite of energy software solutions, and part will
be used to expand the company’s operations globally, according to
Excelergy chairman Cary Bullock.
“Since we doubled our revenues in 2000 versus 1999 while decreasing
our cash burn rate, our need for new investment capital actually
became quite modest,” said Bullock. “In the end, we selected the
most attractive offer with the best terms for our existing stakeholders.”
“The recent turmoil surrounding energy industry restructuring is
actually creating new opportunities for nimble software companies
that can quickly solve problems by bringing new products to Market,”
said Robert E. Davoli, managing director of Sigma Partners. “Excelergy
is also showing extraordinary vision in providing software technology
to an expanding set of energy industry sectors, from retail distribution
to wholesale trading to transmission, generation and supply.” BusinessWeek
recently highlighted Mr. Davoli in its July 24, 2000 cover story
on venture capital.
R. David Tabors, general partner at Battery Ventures, added, “One
of the key things that sets Excelergy apart from its competitors
is its exceptional management team. They are experts, they are experienced,
and they are successful.”
