FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SCT to Acquire EnerLink
Expands iConverge.sct with
Most Comprehensive Utility Billing Management Company
MALVERN, PA., August 21, 2000 — SCT (Nasdaq: SCTC) announced
today that it is acquiring the EnerLink business unit, a complex
billing and rates management software developer, from SAIC. This
acquisition gives SCT – and its clients – increased charge handling
and billing capabilities, including interval data collections
and calculations, which supports real time energy pricing and
meter data acquisition. These capabilities exist in very few energy
billing systems.
Such capabilities are important to utilities facing deregulation,
according to Bill Mahoney, president of SCT energy, utilities and
communications solutions business, because increasing numbers of
large commercial and industrial customers now have a choice of energy
providers. The highly competitive environment of deregulation requires
that utilities offer these companies, who account for more than
half of their annual revenue, value-added services in order to retain
them as clients. With the addition of the EnerLink product line
to SCT’s robust portfolio of energy enterprise solutions, SCT’s
clients will be able to Bill for practically any energy rate for
various time periods including 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes. This provides
SCT’s clients the flexibility to create a vast number of rates offering
their customers more choices.
“Utilities that can offer complex billing and rate management to
large companies have a competitive edge, because they enable their
customers to better manage their energy consumption,” said Mahoney.
“For large commercial and industrial customers who annually spend
hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars on energy, managing
consumption is a critical profitability and planning process. Utilities
facilitating this capability for their customers through tools such
as EnerLink software and services make much more attractive business
partners.”
Guerry Waters, vice president of Energy Information Strategies
for the META Group, said, “We believe a key to success in the competitive
energy space is a flexible CIS system that can accommodate business-enabling
application components. One of the more important component types
will be billing engines capable of being rapidly reconfigured to
Handle complex algorithms and market variables and be integrated
with multiple CIS systems.”
In addition to being flexibly integrated into the SCT Banner and
Synchro product lines, the SCT EnerLink product line will continue
to be available to utilities as a stand-alone solution, or as a
valuable add-on to non-SCT customer solutions.
“The EnerLink product line met our expectations for quality,
but SAIC has determined that it could achieve greater success
if it were placed in the hands of a software products company,”
said Owens Alexander, senior vice president of SAIC’s Utility
Practice. “We anticipate having a relationship with SCT whereby
we can employ their products in solutions that we integrate in
the energy marketplace.”
“The combination of SCT and EnerLink provides the ideal solution
for utilities, particularly at a time when the power of the Internet
and deregulation are converging,” said Frank Hyde, business director
and founder of EnerLink. “We believe SCT’s newly expanded offering
will allow energy companies to take full advantage of these trends,
to the benefit of both themselves and their biggest customers. "EnerLink
combined with SCT will provide the most dynamic billing capabilities
regardless of a utility’s size or energy commodity.”
