BC, CANADA; February 23, 2000 The roll
out next month will cover nearly half of the gas company's 750,000
customers, particularly those in the non-urban areas of Western
Canada and the US Pacific Northwest.
From next month the 300,000 customers will be able to contact the
gas company through the internet and view or pay their account,
enter meter readings and seek information about a variety of products
or energy conservation. In a second stage, state-of-the-art call
centers will be added to cover areas like Vancouver.
Pat Lloyd, vice-president of business technologies and support
for BC Gas, is in New Zealand to review Peace's 160 developer research
and development office in Auckland.
BC Gas, grew out of a private organization and government gas assets
being combined in the 1980s to grow to a business now with $C2.5
billion in assets and $C1.1 billion revenue. Lloyd says a major
problem of managing the business has been that the company did not
take over managing its own customer base. Billing and inquiries
stayed with the electricity business from which the gas assets were
split off.
Lloyd, currently the chairman of the Canadian Gas Association,
says the customer management and billing system is expected to Reduce
the overhead cost of servicing customers by around 20% a year and
has the potential for managing and marketing added value products.
